The Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is situated on the eastern side of the Republic of South Africa in an area known as the Lowveld. Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1898, it was declared a national park in 1926, based on the concept of the world-famous Yellowstone National Park in the United States of America. It spans two provinces, Mpumalanga in the south and Limpopo in the north.

This magnificent park is arguably the most famous wildlife reserve in Africa and one of the best known in the world. It covers an area of nearly 20,000 square kilometres (12,000 square miles) which makes it bigger than some small countries. Bordered on the west by private wildlife parks and on the east by the Limpopo Transfrontier Park into Mozambique, the actual area in which the wildlife roams free exceeds 35,000 square kilometres (Over 20,000 square miles).

The Park boasts an unbelievable diversity of fauna and flora and breath-taking landscapes which are home to over 145 mammal species as well as 500 plus bird species. Numerous species hold world records – the biggest land mammal, the tallest animal, the biggest bird, the heaviest flying land bird, the fastest animal, and many more. Africa’s Big 5 also call the Kruger National Park home. The Park is managed in such a way that the natural processes which have taken place over millions of years can carry on with little or no interference while visitors can be witness to this incredible spectacle. Wildlife viewing can be done from a motor vehicle (self drive), an open safari vehicle driven by a qualified and experienced guide, or on foot led by highly trained, armed safari guides. Visitors can overnight in the park with accommodation ranging from safari tents with shared ablutions to luxury guest houses of 3-star quality.

There are many places in the world which are famous tourist attractions where millions of humans from all over flock to visit – the Kruger National Park stands apart from all of them. It is the place around which childhood dreams are woven, thousands of stories have been written, and endless tales have been told. No matter where you have been, your bucket list is not complete until you visit the Kruger National Park
